Free Genera! [3]

Symbolics Genera

Howard Shrobe writes:

Open Genera is owned by the current incarnation of Symbolics
which is owned by Andrew Topping. I'm sure that he would
be completely opposed to the idea of making Open Genera
Open Source; I've discussed it with him in the past and
it's a non-starter. On the other hand, he might be very
interested in the implementation of a new virtual machine
for either of the targets you mentioned.

As it happens, Brad Parker, cc'd above, has started working
on the PPC version more or less on his own. Paul Robertson
who was involved in the VLM for the Alpha has been providing
some support and was working on it himself before that. It
was nearly working the last I knew but there were some bugs
that prevented the system from completely booting.

Symbolics Genera

Manuel Odendahl writes (translated):

Even if the complete code of Genera cannot be open
sourced, the following parts would be interesting:

- Statice
- Concordia
- parts of the operating system
- the Lisp Compiler
- the OpenGenera Emulator (in case you already have Genera
media and the technology behind that seems to be quite
  impressive too)
- other parts of the system

Symbolics Genera

Fare sent the following email regarding Genera:

Well, Symbolics.com is still selling licenses of Open Genera, so
chances are you won't be able to Open Source it. Of course, the
situation is only worse if Open Genera includes third party code
itself available only under restrictive licenses... The french Lisp
implementation Ilog Talk died this way: cleaning up the code to make
it publishable cost more than the company was ready to afford.

Boston and Open Genera

Boston skyline by Philip Greenspun I'll be in Boston next week to visit my friend Christian.

Perry Metzger suggested we should have another try at getting Open Genera open sourced. So I'm planning to do a little research while I'm in Boston. If you know anything about the current ownership situation of intellectual property of Open Genera please contact me. I'll sumarise our findings as they become available.

I'm interested in meeting with other Lisp aficionados. Just drop me a line!

mystack.com stacks removed

I removed the two mystack.com stacks showing lispmeister.com and Common Lisp references from the left hand column. Something seems broken on their side.

First Review of "Successful Lisp"

Successful Lisp by David B. Lamkins Christopher Petrilli wrote a review of the print edition of Successful Lisp. He likes the book (B+) but has some issues regarding the print quality. Actually the European copies look really fine. Some of the US printed copies don't look crisp. Also the gray backround we used for the listings seems to have faded a bit. It looks like they printed one copy and then used a photocopier to create extra copies in the first print run. I'm working with the printer to improve the print quality. [via lemonodor]

Delivery Problems

Successful Lisp by David B. Lamkins with curling cover Jim Thompson notified me that the copy of Successful Lisp he ordered directly from the printer still hasn't arrived. If you have experienced similar problems, please let me know, so I can do something about it (like getting you a replacement copy).

We also had some reports about curling covers. If you have any issues regarding the print quality or logistics regarding Successful Lisp please notify me. Errata are also very welcome.
